D. Hearing Impairment

Tools Needed

A hearing impaired person can see all the visual information in a Web site, but will not be able to hear any audio content.

Audio information should be presented in captions or an alternative text transcripts for hearing-impaired users.

Even if audio is disabled, you can learn (and spell) the name of the speaker. You can Watch the Video on You Tube. Captions are enabled on lower-right arrow button on the player. Just select the CC option.

Hidden Audience for Captions

  1. Some users may not be able to find one of several volume controls to enable audio or audio may be disrupted.
  2. All users may need captions if the original audio quality is poor.
  3. Non-native speakers of English often use captions to help understand content.
  4. Some users may not have access to headphones, and it is very common to mute audio in public computer labs or common work spaces such as the library.
